MINDA‘S MASTER PLAN
Concept designs for the $200 million plan to redevelop Minda's Brighton site have been revealed, with the beachside village to include new accommodation, work and lifestyle options, green spaces, community facilities and retirement living solutions - the project's community consultation period has officially been opened.
"Minda's purpose is to create an environment where people with intellectual disability can embrace and enjoy the experiences of life," said Minda President, Tony Harrison.
"Together with our lead architects, Woodhead, we have created a vision for the evolution of our Brighton site which will support the organisation's sustainability and deliver an exciting new community concept into one of the state's most desirable suburbs.
"Minda offers a wide range of accommodation and lifestyle options for people with intellectual disability and this new model will ensure those we support can live independent lives in a safe but vibrant community setting designed to meet their specific needs."
The development, which will include housing options for members of the wider community, will offer state-of-the-art accommodation, open community and recreational spaces, a retail and medical precinct, green spaces, a community garden, public art, a local market and a waterwise wetlands habitat to enhance biodiversity.
A safe and beautifully designed coastal walkway and boardwalk will link Minda's 28 hectare beachside property to the coast, bringing the community together in an integrated, vibrant and sustainable coastal village.
Mr Harrison said Minda would retain ownership of the entire 28 hectare site, which had expanded incrementally over many years, resulting in a disjointed development.
"Our Master Plan is being privately funded by Minda and embodies our aspirations of continuing to provide world-leading services that deliver extraordinary outcomes to improve the lives of the people we support," said Mr Harrison.
"For the people we support, the places they want to live, the work they love to do and the lives they want to lead, Minda is evolving."
Detailed planning for the Master Plan has now been completed along with the public display and community consultation period.
The public display - which included poster boards with artists' impressions, a video presentation and a 3D model - ran from 15-25 November 2011 and written submissions from members of the public were accepted until early December 2011.
The redevelopment proposed also includes retirement living options and subsequently retirement living information sessions were also held.
