On Friday 18 November we are holding our annual Minda/Adelaide Development Company Corporate Golf Challenge.
The golf challenge is a fantastic event for networking and sharing in corporate social responsibility amongst key donors, supporters, supplier and business people in the the South Australian community. People who not only appreciate a good game of golf, but also share in Minda's passion for creating an environment where people with an intellectual disability can embrace and enjoy the experiences of life.
Our target for the day is to raise $25,000 for the innovative Self Advocacy Program which has been developed to empower people with an intellectual disability to have a say within the organisation and, most importantly, to be able to link in with their own local communities and become valued community members.

Annette Mayer works at Queensland disability service provider 'Parent to Parent', and has trained a large number of Minda staff in Person Centred Thinking.
Information about Person Centred Thinking and Minda:
Over the last 18 months, Minda has embarked on a journey to modernise its practices and move from a traditional service delivery model to a contemporary approach. The future service at Minda will necessitate a rights based approach, where individual strengths and human rights result in effective Person Centred Thinking (PCT) and includes embracing the Active Support approach within that framework.
The aim of the PCT framework is to discover what is important to each person now and in the future via a process of continual listening and learning. This is achieved by placing the individual person at the centre of the decision making, treating family members as partners and focusing on a person’s skills, capabilities and gifts. This approach is based on values of human rights, including independence, choice and social inclusion, thus enabling people to direct their own support and services rather than fit into the pre-existing service system.
The Active Support model has been accepted as a strategy to improve and increase individual engagement and participation in daily activities. The primary focus is on how staff work with people in a way that empowers those supported and meets the practices of PCT. The model supports staff to move from a “hotel model” of doing everything for individuals to an Active Support model where people participate to the fullest extent. The model provides a training program for staff that comprises both off site training via workshops covering the PCT framework for all direct support staff and managers, plus further sessions on an individual basis where the staff member is observed, coached and given feedback. Once training is completed, the Active Support model needs to be implemented as quickly as possible into the service setting.
By embracing a set of PCT principles and practices, the framework will provide great benefits such as:
